In 2021, Najia Sherzad Hoshmand became a refugee for second time in her life. This time, she was not a young child, but a finance professional that had become the first woman Deputy CEO of the First National Bank of Afghanistan, a mother, and a humanitarian that stood by her countrymen working alongside the US mission there until the fall of Kabul in 2021. This time, instead of crossing a land border to Pakistan, she crossed continents to find security and opportunity in the United States.
Her hope and determination for a better future for her family, country, and all fellow refugees is unwavering, however, as she continues to preserve her cultural heritage as the founder of the Afghan American Community Center (AACC) and, as of recent, joining the Patchwork Indy team as our Director of Refugee Resettlement.
Since Najia partnered with Patchwork Indy this Summer, she has led a mobilization of over 500 private refugee sponsors sponsoring nearly 300 refugees through the Welcome Corps. Her work has stretched nationwide, from Georgia, to California, Illinois, Ohio, Washington, Texas, and Indiana.
We are so proud and thankful to have her on our team and look forward to the helping more refugees like Najia find safety and new opportunity in the United States.
