Refugee Sponsor

As a Refugee Sponsor with the Welcome Corps Program, you will play a pivotal role in welcoming and supporting newly arrived refugees as they transition into life in the United States. This volunteer position offers a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of refugees by providing practical assistance, emotional support, and guidance as they navigate their new environment. Your involvement will help ensure that refugees have the resources and support they need to thrive in their new communities.


Training and Support

Comprehensive training on refugee resettlement, cultural competency, and relevant legal and administrative processes will be provided. Ongoing support and resources will be available from our Private Sponsorship team of experts.

Refugee Sponsor

Responsibilities

Welcoming New Arrivals

  • Meet and greet refugees at the airport or point of arrival.

  • Provide a warm and friendly welcome to help ease the initial transition.

Housing Assistance

  • Assist in finding and securing suitable housing for refugees.

  • Support the setup of a safe and comfortable living environment by organizing household items, furniture, and basic necessities.

Orientation and Integration

  • Provide orientation to local resources, including public transportation, grocery stores, schools, and healthcare facilities.

  • Assist with enrollment in essential services such as health care, education, and language classes.

Cultural Orientation

  • Help refugees understand and navigate American culture, customs, and social norms.

  • Facilitate language learning by connecting refugees with English language classes or tutoring services.

Legal and Documentation Support

  • Assist with the completion of necessary paperwork, including immigration documents, social security applications, and other legal requirements.

  • Provide guidance on understanding and complying with U.S. laws and regulations.

Financial and Employment Support

  • Offer guidance on budgeting and financial literacy.

  • Support refugees in finding employment opportunities by connecting them with local job resources and networks.

Emotional Support and Mentorship

  • Build a trusting relationship with the refugee individuals or families, offering ongoing emotional support and encouragement.

  • Act as a mentor, providing advice and guidance on adapting to life in the U.S.

Community Engagement

  • Facilitate connections with local community groups, faith-based organizations, and social networks to help refugees build a sense of belonging.

  • Encourage participation in community events and activities.

Qualifications

  • Passion for supporting refugees and commitment to the mission of the Welcome Corps Program.

  • Cultural sensitivity, empathy, and patience in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the needs of refugees.

  • Experience in social work, education, or a related field is a plus but not required.

  • Multilingual skills are an asset but not necessary.

  • Ability to complete a background check.
